The Bible is full of stories that have been changed and rewritten over the last few centuries. First and foremost, it was men who had the authority to interpret the writings of the Holy Catholic Church. Let’s imagine if the evangelists had told us not about a son, but about a daughter of God – our world would certainly be different today.
“It’s a Girl” plays with the idea that everything could have been completely different. The work shows a portrait of the Virgin Mary in the classic neo-Gothic style. Unlike historical depictions, the index finger placed on the mouth suggests to us that we want to reveal a secret to the Virgin Mary. The obvious fact that the child of God is depicted as female makes the contradiction between Christian teaching and the gender role of women in enlightened times visible. This ancient view of the theological story of Jesus’ birth is also visually broken by the display inside. The boundaries between imagination and memory are blurring.
