“It’s a Girl” plays with the idea that our world would be different if Jesus had been a girl. The work depicts a portrait of the Virgin Mary in the classic neo-Gothic style. Unlike historical depictions, the index finger placed over her mouth suggests that the Virgin Mary wants to reveal a secret. An animated ultrasound image plays on a small screen in the abdominal cavity. The monitor shows a female embryo, and the words “It’s a girl” are written on the abdominal opening.
